Tigers
The Tiger is a mammal, and the largest member of the cat family of animals. Tigers are very large, and can be identified in part by their distinctive striped fur. Tigers are closely related to lions, leopards and jaguars – and are a fearsome predators.
Tigers in many ways are magnificent creatures, and represent the pinnacle of predator evolution. Today, however, the tiger is on the verge of extinction and is rated as "critically endangered" by scientists. A global effort is in place to breed tigers in captivity and then infuse the population of wild tigers with these newly raised tigers. Also, efforts are being made to stop poachers from killing tigers. Last but not least, environmental conservation efforts are being initiated to help protect the environments in which tigers live. One way they are doing this is by helping to protect the antelope that many tigers eat. By protecting the prey, the predators can be protected as well.
